Diagnostic chewing gum on its way to the market

A chewing gum that warns of inflammation in the oral cavity: scientists at the University of Würzburg have been focusing on this clever idea for a long time.

The Chair of drug formulation and delivery together with a team of scientists from Berlin, Jena, Basel, and Rimini has developed a diagnostic chewing gum, diagnosing for inflammation in the oral cavity. Such inflammation is particularly concerning e.g. for carries of dental implants – it is for this and other indications why an easy to use diagnostic, independent of power supply and creating signals everyone understands may provide important leverage. Our diagnostic was developed along these lines. If diseased, sensors within the chewing gums produce a bitter taste and indicating the possible infection to the individual. Conceptually, anyone can diagnose, anytime and anywhere – which is why the start-up company developing this concept calls itself 3a diagnostics for anyone, anytime, and anywhere.
