Pharmacy is science of medicines and ensuring the supply of society thereof

Pharmacists characterize medicines and finished products, evaluate their respective mode of action and efficacy and generally deals with developing, manufacturing, controlling and distributing medicine and medical products. Moreover, pharmaceutical sciences try to improve and develop therapies as well as finding new drugs and drug targets, respectively.

Pharmacy is a very interdisciplinary science which is based upon chemistry and biology as well as physiology, biochemistry, and pharmacology.

Aims and study content

By studying pharmacy you will learn a broad knowledge of all relevant pharmaceutical topics as well as get the capability of working as a licensed pharmacist (in Germany). Studies also deliver a strong scientific education.

Studying Pharmacy is only possible after having successfully applied for a place at University; a higher education graduation is a general prerequisite ("Hochschulreife").

Duiring your studies you have to work in laboratories a lot of time and perform many practical experiments; thus, you should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary scientific challenges and natural sciences in general. Working at an official pharmacy in particular requires good communication skills, the ability to work in teams and providing good consultation and service and to the customers.

In Germany, Pharmacy is divided into five disciplines which are:

  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry
  • Pharmaceutical Technology and Biopharmacy
  • Pharmaceutical Biology
  • Clinical Pharmacy
